Corruption, stealing, robbery of state treasury by political office holder have kept us where we are today as a nation.
The worst form of crime is corruption of the judiciary, that is the desecration of the fountain of justice. It makes the people to lose confidence in that important arm of government.
If justice is on sale in any country, one can be sure that the poor will not get justice in that country. We may soon get there if care is not taken.
For long the process of recruitment of Judges in Nigeria has been very corrupt, though measure are being taken to correct that recently. Every judicial officer apart from those who have been in the bench for long were candidates of either a politician, judge, top lawyer, top civil servants, Obas, Ezes or Emirs.
How do we expect the best from such a person nominated by characters like those mentioned above with vested interests? who pays the piper dictates the tune. If the foundation is destroyed, what can the righteous do?
Apart from appointment process, Nigeria became deviled by the corrupting influence of politicians in electoral cases. Politicians make provisions of money both in local and foreign currencies for judges in political cases.
Politicians, lawyers, judges, pressmen and even common people are aware. Have the NJC done enough to sanitize the bench? One can give them a pass mark, For four years now, punishment are never meted out to erring judges despite allegations but it happened now and the NJC is overwhelmed!
Most times hard evidence is difficult to produce in allegations of bribery and corruption because givers and takers are very smart.
